DB 214ish - Oddball 50s Hash Analversary
DB #214ish - Oddball’s 50 Years of Hashing Mayhem
Fifty years ago, a young man laced up his shoes, cracked a warm beer, and began his lifelong mission: to run badly, drink well, and get hilariously lost doing both.
He kicked off in Bahrain (1975–1980), learning three vital hashing rules: trust the flour, fear the heat, and never forget the loo roll. Nobody knew his name back then—just that he sweat like a camel and ran like he owed someone money.
In Hong Kong (1980–1983), he became Snave—allegedly “Evans” backwards, though some say it’s how he ran trails—backwards. He also joined the inaugural run in Macau, marking the start of his globe-trotting trail chaos.
Then came Bermuda (1985–1992), where he became Dopey, possibly for his cheerful confusion or the trail that accidentally circled a pub five times. Naturally, he was also on the inaugural Bermuda run (or was it a rum?), which started late, ended early, and involved a sheep. (Details remain classified.)
In Barnes, UK (1993), he tried to reclaim some dignity. Unfortunately, they named him Oddball after he brought a compass, a map of France, and spoke only in pirate accents. A legend was born.
Back in Bahrain (1994–1998), then off to Antigua (1998–2015), Oddball became a living myth. In Antigua, he once led the pack into a goat wedding and got offered rum as a peace treaty.
Now in Javea, Spain (2016–present), he’s still hashing strong. Still running in the wrong direction. Still finishing with a beer in hand. And still occasionally lost.
50 years. 7 countries. 4 names. One legend.
Here’s to Oddball—our backward-running, beer-hunting, pirate-accent-speaking hasher.
On on!
